IP65 what does it stand for?

IP stands for Ingress Protection, which indicates the degree of protection of a certain product. This degree is divided into two values, the first and the second IP number. The higher the number, the better the protection. But what exactly does IP65 stand for? We are happy to explain it to you in this blog.
What are IP values?
As briefly mentioned in the previous paragraph, the IP values are an indication of the degree of protection of a product. IP stands for Ingress Protection. These values are specified according to the International Protection Rating (IP rating) standard, which was developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC, 2022).
The values are expressed in two numbers that indicate increasingly better protection as they increase. The first number indicates how much protection the product offers against solids, objects and dust. The second digit indicates how much protection the product offers against liquids. Lamps in a warehouse naturally have a lot to do with dust. That is why all our bedrijfsverlichting have the correct IP values to give them the right protection.
IP values dust tightness
The first digit indicates how much protection the product offers against dust, solids and objects. This number ranges from 0 to 6. Below you will find an overview of what each value stands for:
- 0 stands for no protection against dust.
- 1 stands for protection against solid objects larger than 50mm
- 2 stands for protection against solid objects larger than 12.5mm
- 3 stands for protection against solid objects larger than 2.5mm
- 4 stands for good protection against dust
- 5 stands for complete dust-tightness
- 6 stands for complete dust-tightness where the fitting can be rinsed against dust.
IP values waterproofness
The second number indicates how much protection the product offers against liquids. This number ranges from 0 to 8. Below is an overview of what each value represents:
- 0 offers no protection
- 1 offers protection against drops
- 2 offers protection against vertical streams
- 3 offers protection against spray water
- 4 offers protection against water jets
- 5 offers protection against water jets with a force of 12.5 liters pm
- 6 offers protection against fast flowing water
- 7 offers protection against complete immersion
- 8 offers protection against immersion up to 1 meter
What exactly is IP65?
Lighting with IP65 is therefore resistant to dust, solids, objects and water. However, it may not be submerged. Lighting with IP65 can be used in various locations, such as in gardens, on terraces, at swimming pools, in warehouses, at schools, in parking garages, on sports fields, in public spaces, etc. This IP value is therefore extremely versatile.
What are the advantages of IP65?
As previously described, IP65 offers excellent protection against dust, solids, objects and water. Some of the advantages of IP65 compared to other IP ratings, such as IP20 and IP44, are: much better protection against dust and liquids. IP65 also offers better protection against UV radiation, weather influences and chemicals.
